 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do we meet In-Person or Online?

A: Both! I have a physical office in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle, WA, where I’m in the office Mondays only. The rest of the week I see clients virtually! If you’re curious about virtual counseling but would like to meet in-person first, no problem! Contact me to book your free consult, and we can schedule our first appointment face-to-face.

Q: How does Virtual Counseling work?

A: Virtual Counseling works much like talking over Skype or Facetime. However, those platforms are not secure, meaning they can’t guarantee your privacy - NOT cool. Instead we will have our therapy sessions on VSee, a secure teleconferencing platform, which ensures our sessions stay confidential. At your appointment time, I will call you from a secure and quiet location (my office), and you will answer my call from your secure and quiet location, and we will have therapy over video! Any paperwork, assessment, activities will be made available to you through email or….

Q: Is Virtual Counseling effective?

A: Virtual Counseling has some amazing benefits, as well as some disadvantages. You deserve to know all the pros and cons to virtual counseling before determining if it’s a good fit for you. What you may like about virtual counseling is that there’s no commute (no extra time stuck in traffic!), it’s accessible for all bodies, it’s an option for those who have difficulty traveling or leaving their home (perhaps due to illness, anxiety, having babies or kids), and we can work together no matter where you live in Washington state!

Bonus: you can stay in your pjs, pour yourself some coffee, and go to your therapy appointment from the comfort of your own home. You may even find yourself feeling more open and comfortable than you would in a therapy office…

Yet, some people enjoy attending therapy appointments outside their home, and having an in-person experience, where they can leave all their worries in a different part of town, or where they can hug it out. To each their own! If you’re curious about virtual counseling, but would like to meet in-person first, call me to set up a appointment!

Q: This is my first time in therapy, what can I expect?

A: Welcome! Congratulations on prioritizing yourself in this way! If you hesitated for weeks, months, or years before calling - you are not alone. It is a Big (usually scary) step. You may be wondering if your problems are “serious” enough for counseling, or if the counselor’s personality will click with yours, if you will be able to divulge your most private thoughts and feelings, if your counselor will see your uniqueness and honor your identities, or if therapy will even help?

What you can expect from our work together is the continual invitation to be exactly who you are and how you are that day. You can think of me as a container for everything that’s too heavy to carry (no matter how big or small the struggle), or the mirror that helps you learn about yourself, from yourself! Weekly meetings typically yield the best (fastest) outcomes, but you decide the pace. And as for personality, if you enjoy qualities like down-to-earth, open, and committed to justice for all bodies, I might be right for you! But just to be sure, let’s see how we feel during our free 20-minute phone consultation, before diving in and scheduling our first session together.

Q: This is my first time meeting with a nutritionist, what can I expect?

A: First of all, what this is NOT going to be is a nutrition consultation that leaves you feeling judged because of your food choices. OR the times of day or night that you eat. OR the amounts that you eat. OR where you eat. OR what TV shows you watch while you eat! There are few things more individual than how and why we eat, and you have your particular eating habits for GOOD REASON. My role is to help you explore what feels like it’s working for you and what isn’t. You are the expert on how your body feels, I’m just here to help you gather information and run some experiments!

Q: So is this Mental Health Counseling, or Nutrition Counseling….. or Both?

A: It’s either one. Or both! You might be seeking help with a mental health issue like anxiety or low self-esteem where body dissatisfaction plays a role. You may have questions about whether intuitive eating can really be a nutritious and healthful way to eat. We can cover either, or both! As a certified nutritionist and mental health counselor, my unique form of therapy lies at the intersection between how we feel about our bodies and how we feed them. It’s a two-way street!

Q: I think I may have a diagnosable Eating Disorder (i.e. Anorexia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, etc), can we still work together?

A: Unfortunately, I don’t work with individuals with active eating disorders. Eating Disorder treatment requires a higher level of medical care than I am qualified to provide, and as they recover, ED survivors often benefit from working with whole teams of healthcare providers (doctors, dietitians, therapists, peer support, etc). If you live in the Seattle area and suspect you may have an active eating disorder, please check out the treatment options at Opal food + body wisdom.

Q: How do I know if I have an active Eating Disorder?

A: There is a whole spectrum of disordered relationship to food and body. It’s perfectly understandable to not know where you fall, and what kind of help is best. Please take this self-assessment from The Emily Program or this one from Eating Recovery Center to see if their programs might fit your needs better.

Q: Do you take insurance?

For nutrition services, I take Premera insurance.

For mental health counseling, I am private-pay only and accept all major credit cards. I provide a sliding scale on a case-by-case basis, and those with non-dominant identities are encouraged to inquire.

For BOTH nutrition and mental health services, I am willing to provide clients with a Super Bill that clients may then provide to their insurance company to request reimbursement. Clients may wish to call their insurance company to inquire what details are required as I do not contact clients’ insurance companies.
